Comment: from NASS registry- A spectacular, and perhaps unique dial delineated on the inside walls of a purposely built "Sun Tower". Roofed by a dome with a central aperture the concept of the dial recalls the Pantheon. Hourly analemmas are marked on the vertical walls of the Tower. Other indications include the sun's altitude and azimuth.

Location: at the junction of seven streets in central London. It is less than about 500 meters north of Trafalgar Square.
Date: unknown
Comment: Roger Bailey says: “Known as “Seven Dials”. The sundials date back to the 17th century when the area was originally redeveloped. The trick question is how may dials are there at Seven Dials? The column and dials must have been refurbished and rededicated in 1989. The painted faces are now peeling badly but the gilding looks good. I didn't get any pictures of the east sun as this would have been right into the sun.” Richardr says this in his Flickr website below: “Seven Dials is a small but well-known road junction in the West End of London near Covent Garden where seven streets converge. At the centre of the roughly circular space is a pillar bearing six (not seven) sundials. The original Seven Dials area was designed by Thomas Neale in the early 1690s. The original plan had six roads converging, although this was later increased to seven. The sundial pillar was built with only six faces, however, probably because of the original design. This high number of roads was chosen in order to maximise the
number of houses that could be built on the site. Neale aimed for the site to be a popular with well-off residents, following the successful development of the nearby fashionable Covent Garden Piazza area. This was not to be, however, and the area deteriorated. At one stage, each of the seven apexes facing the column housed a pub. By the nineteenth century, Seven Dials had become one of the most notorious slums in London, being part of the rookery of St Giles. The area was described colourfully by Charles Dickens in his collection Sketches by Boz, which includes the quote: “The stranger who finds himself in the Dials for the first time...at the entrance of Seven obscure passages, uncertain which to take, will see enough around him to keep his curiosity awake for no inconsiderable time... It was still a byword for urban poverty in the early twentieth century, when Agatha Christie set The Seven Dials Mystery (1929) there. The original sundial column was removed in 1773. It had been believed that this was due t
o being pulled down by an angry mob, although recent research suggests it was deliberately removed by the Paving Commissioners in an attempt to rid the area of undesirables. The remains were acquired by architect James Paine, who kept them at his house in Addlestone, Surrey. In 1820, the remains were purchased by public subscription and re-erected in nearby Weybridge, as a memorial to the Duchess of York.”

Date: 1990
Location: Team Disney Building at Disney World Headquarters, Lake Buena Vista Florida USA
Size: height: 120’, width at base: 118.5’, Width at top: 84.5’. The NASS Register says: “According to the Guinness Book of Records, 1995, this is the world's largest sundial.” Editor’s note: This claim is disputable because the word “largest” is not defined.
Comments: This is a large hollow cone that’s truncated and slanted. It looks like it has two sundials because there are hour and date lines on both the inside and the outside walls of the cone. But only the interior lines function as a sundial. The exterior lines and exterior gnomon are simply decorative and are nonfunctional. A single large horizontal pointed gnomon with a ball nodus sits on the cone’s rim. In 1992 the building won the National Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects.

Location: The sundial declines 4 degrees and 20 minutes on the southern wall of The Singing Tower at Historic Bok Sanctuary Florida. 1151 Tower Boulevard, Lake Wales, Florida 33853 USA
Date: sundial installed on October 26, 1928.
Size: approx 12 feet x 6 feet
Comment: The Gothic and Art Deco Singing Tower is 205 feet tall and houses one of the world’s finest carillons with 60 bells. The gnomon is a 5 feet long bronze rod supported by a bronze snake, the ancient symbol of time. The Georgia marble face is decorated with the twelve signs of the zodiac. Declination lines are present. Has hour lines with Roman numerals and half hour lines. There’s a sunburst pattern above gnomon. An Equation of Time correction table is at the base of the sundial. Edward Bok's Singing Tower is at the highest elevation south of the reflection pool so the water reflects its full image. Historic Bok Sanctuary is open every day of the year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with last admission at 5 p.m. The Education and Visitor Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission tickets are good for one day only and do not include specially ticketed events.

Location: on the southeast and southwest sides of a tall center marker in the centre of the park bounded by Brock, Napier and Mack Streets in Kingston Ontario Canada
Date: June 1973
Size: A square pillar of limestone rocks 3 feet on a side and 12 feet high with a small bowl and sphere on top holds four vertical dials each 2x2 feet.
Comment: The pillar faces are not oriented to the cardinal points allowing the four declining dials. The dials are of solid brass with hour lines and Arabic numbers in a modern design contrasting to the rustic stonework of the pillar. The dial commemorates the five hundredth anniversary of the birth of Copernicus, and the 300th year anniversary of the founding of the city of Kingston as Fort Frontenac. Comments: Martin Beek says this: “Since the Middle Ages, Witney was famous for the manufacturing of blankets using water from the River Windrush which, so the story goes, was the secret of their quality. Over recent years Witney has grown rapidly, yet it still manages to retain its charm as an attractive Cotswold market town. The market square which lies at the junction of the two main streets contains the Buttercross, a medieval marketing and meeting place where women from neighbouring villages gathered to sell butter and eggs. It has a steeply gabled roof surmounted by a clock-turret added in 1683. Opposite is the 17th century Town Hall. Market Square widens into Church Green which is dominated by the tower and spire of the 13th century church of St. Mary”.

Comment: Patrick Powers says: “The dials are nearly Direct ones and are visible from New Globe Walk. Both dials radiate from a central circular grey disc (650mm diam) edged in gold. The south dial declines west. the west dial declines north. They were designed by Johanna Migdal and made by Brookbrae Ltd. Installed I think in 1998.”

Maker: noted Dutch dialist, Hendrik Hollander
Location: on church tower in Witmarsum Holland
Date: installed on 19 May 2009
Size: 40 x 40 inches (104 x104 cm)
Materials: wood, painted, gilded figures, gilded half hour points and gilded shadowcaster
Comments: These comments appear in the website below: “In the 1940s, the church clock was at the top of the cupola tower, and there was a sundial at the bottom. During restorations in the 1960s, the clock was moved to the location of the sundial. The sundial was in poor condition, and was removed. With the restorations in 1996, the cupola tower was restored to its original style and red colour. The clock moved back to the top of the tower. Because there was now space between the belfry windows, the then church wardens decided to reinstate even more of the former style, and to place a sundial on the lower part of the tower again. The new sundial was installed on 19 May 2009, but at the time it was partly hidden by the restoration scaffolding. On Saturday 4 July, the sundial was officially turned over to Otte Leijendekker of the College of Church Stewards. Source: Hannie Kroontje in Bolswards Nieuwsblad of 8 July 2009. The new sundial is a gift to the church by the "Birthday Club".
